FARM INFORMATION

RUBEN VELASCO

Varietals: Caturra and Castillo
Processing: Washed
Altitude: 1950 masl
Owner: Ruben Velasco
Location: Miranda, Cauca, Colombia

The municipality of Miranda is situated in the north east corner of the department of Cauca. This region until recently was heavily inhabited by the FARC, ELN, Paramilitary groups and guerrillas who looked to control this central corridor in Colombia. This region has not been known for specialty production but as the tensions ease and access has improved it is now possible to demonstrate the quality of the coffees available and have access to coffee like this.

Reuben Velasco Corpus is 38 years old and lives on Bella Vista with his wife Luz Ayde Dindicue (40 years) and their three daughters. The 2ha farm has 1.5ha planted with approximately 6200 trees on the land. During the year the farm in total produces about 1850kg of parchment each year which equates to only about 20 bags of green coffee. During the harvest the coffee is picked by Ruben and Luz Ayde after which it is depulped and then dry fermented for between 12 – 16 hours over night, after this it is washed and dried in a parabolic drier.

All our coffees are roasted and packed in foil-lined bags at our roastery in Penryn, Cornwall.

We roast, hand-pack and ship all orders on Thursday, including Smält Hot Chocolates, merchandise and hardware items.
